What is it about this desire or need to communicate? What is it that we want to communicate? Does it have any merit other than simply talking to ourselves? For me, photography is like a second language. Perhaps I am just enough of an introvert that image language satisfies this tendency to at least visualize what I know or think I know. Yes, it is me talking to myself, to you, and others willing to see and listen. These writings will let you know a bit about me and what I have learned or gained/interpreted from others. I believe you will find joy/sadness, light/darkness, and success/failure being directly or metaphorically communicated.

The books and zines listed here touch on pauses in life, civil behavior, personal imaging growth, idea blogging, and haiku writing. Yes, it could be that it is “all about me” but, you may find that a few of the sentences could be about you!

But some offer something additional and flavored with meaning. They are the ones I want to give homage to in this zine. They are photographers who I believe are masters of the craft of seeing and communicating.

Yahara Photographic: Resonance (Volume Seven)
To explore the term resonance that connects photography with the inner artist prompts the meaningful and serious side of art and craft. There is a creative tension and fine-tuning that is felt. It is not a term to take lightly in either work or life.

Yahara Photographic: Mannequin Listening (Volume Eight)

Yes, there is the most well-recognized purpose for mannequins, the sale of fashion and other products. But I believe there is something more to consider. It is what this zine is trying to bring before us; the very real relational cnnection between 'them' and us.

Yahara Photographic: Nighthawking (Volume Nine)

There is a well-known painting by Edward Hopper entitled Nighthawks. Whenever I look at this particular work of his, I find myself entering that corner coffee shop and sitting alongside the people at the counter. The scene is late at night, and the lonesome part of me is activated. And then, I suddenly want to make a quick road trip to close-by metros of Milwaukee, Minneapolis, or Chicago.

Yahara Photographic: Wabi Sabi (Volume 10)

This volume on wabi-sabi represents a fitting conclusion---beauty in the nature of things and beauty in their transient nature. The more I study the philosophical aspects of Taoism and the complementary understandings of  Zen Buddhism, haiku poetry, and Wu-Wei, the more I enjoy the art of photography.

Civility: Belonging with Dignity

By Don W. Mendenhall
Charleston, SC 48 pages. 7"x10".

In today's highly polarized climate of political interaction and social discourse that is growing in intensity, so much negativity is being communicated from all sides that the idea of civility has crept more and more into the collective consciousness. "Can't we just all get along?" is a common lament that pervades interpersonal and corporate environments alike. A large part of getting along is treating each other with respect and courtesy. But how do you do that when confronted with uncivil behavior by others?

This unique book explores the practical expression of civility through a series of personal stories that serve as outstanding real-life models for civil behavior in the face of conflict. These stories will encourage readers to take a closer look at their own lives while prompting acknowledgment of personal and inter-relationship issues and offer useful ideas about how to live more respectful and trusting lives. Individuals, as well as employers, government and religious leaders, teachers, conflict management and human rights consultants, police and military leaders, and countless others will benefit from the book's insights and examples.

The stories presented within these pages provide topics of discussion that will lead to deeper sharing and support within organizations and between everyday people and bring to the reader authentic and hope-filled responses to a troubled society.
