About

Photographic art, like other art mediums, is a form of communication. It is like a second language with different cultural and regional/global dialects expressed in capturing tones, shapes, textures, lines, and subject matter choices. The richness of this ‘language’ comes through in the ‘play of light.' Each photograph is captured and developed to speak of the essence felt from each subject. A photographer's palette, paper choices, and printing inks are all incorporated into the message.

Photographic Arts Background

My experience in image-making and presentations happened in the classroom as a teacher, in the field as a consultant, and globally as a videographer and researcher. But most enjoyable are the current experiences of coaching and teaching the photographic arts and chats with art show customers.

Though primarily self-taught, I do owe much to three gifted photographers, Joyce Tenneson, George DeWolfe, and Deanna Fitzmaurice, having taken workshops from them via the Santa Fe Workshops. It was Joyce saying that my images were good, but she had seen them all before! George linked me to my contemplative artist within, and Deanna prompting an inner strength to be in courageous relationships with one's surroundings.

Lately, the focus has been on the classic philosophical themes of the Taoist worldview. It presents the ideas of living a life of simplicity, naturalness, compassion, and with no willful striving nor over-manipulation. Tao also involves an acceptance of the deep rhythms of nature and the "way of all things.” The intent was to explore how this philosophy might affect a photographer’s approach and way of seeing. I  hope you feel that influence in what this website offers.
